Making sense of concealed

This book is a result of Jung's extensive study of old Alchemical practices and his efforts to connect and interpret it in the light of his own psychological concepts. The book gives sense to ancient Alchemy practices and explains them as symbols of the process of human spiritual growth.
Jung explains different steps of this process and illustrates them with phases of the symbolic process of alchemic transmutation, leading to integration of the soul and producing alchemyc gold - or in terms of his own concept the result of the process of individuation.
Concrete examples from his own psychiatric experience of dream analysis and monitoring psychological growth very vividly and convincingly illustrate this concept in action.
The book is richly illustrated with authentic alchemic iconography which renders reader authentic atmosphere and taste of ancient art.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in connecting ancient spiritual practices and modern psychological interpretation theories.

Difficult but impressive work

Jung explored alchemy as if it were a mystery novel--relishing every clue, interpreting (nominally) each symbol as it arose. His conclusion that it paralleled his psychological observations & model satisfied his incredible yearning to know that he wasn't crazy or a voice crying in the wilderness--yeah, verily, the alchemists pursued the same goal though in a slightly different way--vindicating Jung's quest for individuation=personal salvation. Thus, Jung's love for alchemy. It's unfortunate that even so-called scientists have ego's so wounded that they disavow their roots: chemists tend to downplay alchemy as astronomers downplay astrology--denigrating their roots. This shows an appalling lack of courage--something Jung had no lack of. Just think of what courage it must have taken for Jung to write about alchemy as having psychological truth embedded in its very heart. Yet he wrote 2 books worth on it CW12 & CW13. I'm in awe of his courage, let alone of his genius. Try reading some alchemy works yourself--if you think Jung is hard to read, think twice. Alchemical works are far more difficult. It took Jung's supreme effort to decipher them. So, if this work seems obtuse to you (& it is), consider how obtuse it was to Jung. Some of the best (& most profound) quotes in this work (from the hardback version) are:

p. 3 Even the most unqualified layman thinks he knows all about psychology as the psyche were something that enjoyed the most universal understanding. But anyone who really knows the human psyche will agree with me when I say that it is one of the darkest & most mysterious regions of our experience.

p. 117 paragraph 152. Only a fool is interested in other people's guilt, since he cannot alter it. The wise man learns only from his own guilt. He will ask himself: Who am I that all this should happen to me? To find the answer to this fateful question he will look into his own heart.

p. 222 Sense and nonsense are merely man-made labels which serve to give us a reasonably valid sense of direction.

A book that draw you to the presence of God

As a born again believer, a follower of Jesus Christ there is one thing that should always be at the forefront of our relationship with Jesus and that is His presence. You find that in this christian walk there are so many things to do for Jesus but the main thing is not doing it's being. Hosting His Presence is about us carrying His presence and understanding what this is. This book by far is the best that Bill has written. God's presence is what we are after. Being surrounded with Him is the utmost number one important thing in a Christians walk. This book draws you into knowing God. It is inspiring and contagious.

A must read!!!!

Like a skilled photographer, who when taking a picture of a vast landscape draws our focus to a specific point of beauty, Pastor Bill Johnson has penned a work that describes and illuminates the glorious focal point of the Christian way of life; hosting the presence of God. This book will birth within you an unquenchable hunger to host God's presence. More than once I found myself under the power of the Holy Spirit as I earnestly searched through its pages knowing that I was being taken on a journey that would change me forever. As I finished the last page several hours ago I realized that this is a book I will re-read many times. It is that powerful. Get a copy and read it. Your life will be changed as you learn what it means to host the presence of God. Prepare to fall in love with God all over again. There is a passionate message describing His desire to be in relationship with you written within the pages of this book. I don't know how to describe it any better. As I read this book, I felt the presence of God. Read it and you will see what I mean.

THE ONE THING

We live in an information-rich society. Our churches reflect the same theme: Information. The trouble is, God reveals Himself to us in revelation and personal experience. In fact, He hides from the lukewarm and the scoffer, while revealing Himself to the "dirty rotten sinner" who is seeking Him with their whole heart. Pastor Bill Johnson hits the nail on the head just as King David did by seeking with all his heart "the one thing." What is that "one thing?" It is hosting the presence of God. (Psalm 27:4)

With no apology or excuses I say that Jesus was fully man, and depended on God fully for everything He did and everything he said....just like you and me. The Last days will become an enlightenment of grace and the Father's love. For that to tke place, we desperately need "the one thing: God's presence. If this book is not a foundational work for every member in every church, then what is? You have heard that "overcoming sin is the principle thing." Hosting His presence is how that happens! You have heard it said "We need to overcome fear in these perilous times." Hosting His presence is how it happens! You have heard it said "We need personal and national repentance and miraculous breakthroughs!" Hosting His presence is how it happens.

Someone once said: "I don't care where you go. I don't care what you do. I only want to be with you." THAT is "the one thing." According to Psalm 22:3, God inhabits the praises of His believers. Pastor Bill reminds us that Derek Prince said: "If I have 10 minutes in prayer, 8 minutes should be in worship." How humbled I am, and how right he is. Bill will take paper and a pen with him during his prayer time to write down impressions of what Holy Spirit is saying to him. Why bother? Because when you really really really love someone, you treasure everything about them, including every word spoken to you; more than the food on your table or the bed you sleep on.

No wonder Bill Johnson's life has impacted so many. He focuses on "the one thing", hosting the presence of the One who would do anything to to bring him home to marry him, even if it including surrendering His life. "THE ONE THING." It's how our heavenly Father feels about you and me. If you decide to hunger for "the one thing", your touched life can change the atmosphere over this country and the world. Hosting His presence is that important.

Silly Book

The Rookie Club is a group of female police officers who seem to solve most of the crimes. Male officers are very much in the background and are portrayed as bumbling, incompetent or corrupt.

Unfortunately in this book the female officers have the annoying "silly me" attitude that many authors give to policewomen. Silly me, I let my phone battery run down. Silly me, I went to visit a suspect alone without telling anyone where I was going. Silly me, I left my gun on the seat of my car when I went inside.

Poor writing makes it difficult to keep track of people's names and who they are in the cast of characters. The author compounds the problem by switching randomly between first and surname making it even more confusing.

As for the police procedures, there are very few and what there are don't ring true.

I read the book through to the end. Silly me.

Can't wait to read more from this author

The Rookie Club was first brought to my attention by the author's myspace page. I initially thought it sounded too much like James Patterson's Women's Murder Club series and didn't think about reading it. After seeing the book everywhere I turned I thought I was probably being unfair and picked it up. I'm so glad I did. This book stands very firmly on its own two feet. I loved all the characters and can't wait to read more about them. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes police procedurals or just a good book with good writing and a great story.

Well researched, well written, compelling mystery thriller

The first thing I noticed when I browsed through the pages of "The Rookie Club" was the crisp, taut writing style. Nothing seemed out of place. I could just start reading on any page, and quickly I was drawn into the action and the events being described. When you turn to page one and start reading, the drama builds very quickly. You jump right into the story and you don't want to stop.

Danielle Girard's descriptions of scenes and what her characters are thinking and feeling are incredibly vivid and realistic. You feel the victim's tension and fear as a criminal approaches. You suffer her horror as the crime takes place. You experience the desperation and frustration of the investigating team as they grasp at slender threads of evidence and possibilities that don't yet make a clear picture. Yet they know someone horrible is still out there, someone whose criminal activity is clearly not complete, someone indeed who seems to be closing in.

Danielle Girard puts an enormous amount of energy into her work. While writing "The Rookie Club" she researched everything from DNA to resource sciences and geographical detail to the real work of coroners and the typical daily life of a sex crimes inspector. The result is a book that reads like a depiction of real events that happened to real people. And that makes what you're reading all the more compelling, and frightening.

Originally, I saw Linguistics: A complete Introduction at Barnes and Noble and thumbed through it there. My interests are in gleaning any extra knowledge and insight I can into linguistics so that I can apply that to helping teach others to write and speak English properly.

This seller had the book listed for a fair amount less than B&N. The book arrived very promptly, and was everything described: right item, new condition, etc.

Childhood is now seen as being so complex that parents and teachers frequently feel the need to seek out and follow often conflicting 'expert advice' on how to raise and teach children, rather than following their natural instincts and common sense.

Respecting Children advocates a more balanced approach, calling for views of children that allow them to be children, and to live their childhood in the present, rather than constantly having to follow the dubious proposition of 'maximizing' their learning and development in order to become more competitive, successful adults in the future.

Each chapter explores a different aspect of children's lives, such as their relationships with others, their capabilities, their behaviour, and looks to how these compare in the different contexts of society, home and school life. 'Windows on research', case studies and discussion questions engage the reader, making this book accessible for undergraduate students of courses such as Childhood Studies, Early Childhood Education and Education Studies, and to those of MA Education and MA Childhood and Society programmes.
