The Bang/Buck Ratio is Quite Skewed
By Feikken
This isn't a bad novel by any means, but it just does not seem at all like it was intended to be distributed as a product to be payed for.
The transitions from character to character could have been a bit more graceful (going from one perspective, part of a continent, and to a totally different situation in the next sentence is almost enough to give you literary whiplash), unsympathetic protagonists (one of the villains seemed to be genuinely in the right most of the time instead of just looking like the total killjoy the author tried to make her out to be), and typos, typos, typos. I think it was the typos that got to me the most. I can handle an occasional "there" instead of a "their"; I'm not an unreasonable guy. Throw them at me consistently throughout about 300 pages? It can wear anyone down.
I will say that the setting itself is pretty interesting. I would genuinely be okay with reading more about the main characters, too. Those knuckleheads get into all sorts of trouble.
But the meat and potatoes of this book, the sex, was pretty good. Kind of like watery glue: it manages to keep the story from falling apart, but it still slides a bit from time to time.
Rambling aside, you could do a whole lot worse than Within Hallowed Walls. There are so few furry authors I'm tempted to check out the next one in the series to see if the author got a better editor.

A slow start to an otherwise brilliant series
By Wolf In Arms
Despite the immense amounts of potential featured within the universe and characters featured within the novel, it's honestly kept down by a few very important issues: so important, in fact, that I nearly quit the book a few times over them.
The first issue, and most prominent, is that the book has very little in terms of good layout. What I mean by this primarily is how the book's scene changes are structured. They're incredibly jarring: there is absolutely no identification that the change happens until you realize they're talking about another character suddenly, so you end up having to watch out for it. It's likely a cause of how the Kindle is actually laid out, but it's still an absolute annoyance to the point where I wanted to just stop reading for the first few times it did this.
Secondly, the book's plot isn't as engaging as the ones later in the series. After reading (and loving) the other books in the trilogy, I remembered back to this book with some amazement that I kept reading. I'm 100% thankful that I did, but there's really not the interesting overall plot that the others have. Case in point? This book parades itself as showing the social discrimination and expectations that the Paladins are subjugated to, but it only really comes into play in the last few chapters (and with essentially only one character). There really isn't an antagonist until towards the end, and even then the character isn't as much of an antagonist as she is a 'rival' of the Paladins.
In fact, this book seems to be more of setting up for the later ones than being its own important book. While I honest-to-God want it after finishing the incredibly emotional and heart-breaking ending of the third book, this is more about the Paladins running around doing random duties: the calm before the storm, essentially. Though I wish that the big bad of the trilogy was more referenced in the undertone of this book than simply stated at the very end.
The final issue that I have is the amount of grammatical errors featured: it's as if either spell check wasn't working for this guy or he was using an iPhone's correction tool for every word he typed. Some of them aren't really sensibly-placed, others just aren't spelled right.
Despite this, however, the book did leave me looking desperately for more. The characters are all enjoyable, and though not too much of them really gets developed beyond social views and backstory, they prove to be likable and yet keep you calling out to them as you read, essentially demanding these fictional characters to avoid complacency to their faults. Each one of them is well thought-out, and is generally understandable. Even the villains of this book are somewhat understandable, unlike later in which they go off the deep end as the story progresses. Watching not just the Paladins, but also those they interact with, evolve from this first novel left me highly satisfied and even proud of the characters who surpassed their faults.
Better yet, the later ones (which I HIGHLY recommend-...no, DEMAND reading) are far better built than this one. Scene changes actually feel natural and are even good, grammatical errors drop drastically, and the plot thickens to the point where you have trouble actually putting down the book for chapters at a time. Interestingly enough, they also do a very good job of reminding the reader of the story behind objects, places, people, etc. For example, a quick and well-placed reminder for a device and its purpose would come up when the device would be used by a characters: the reminder would provide ample explanation for someone who had forgotten or never read of it previously, while not overloading someone whom remembers the purpose of the device with excess information.
In short, while you could easily skip to the next book in the series, I absolutely plead with you to read through this book. The characters are touching, the plot strangely gripping despite its simplicity: skipping this book would be a disaster onto itself, despite its issues. Skipping the whole series entirely would be a cataclysmic error worthy of the entirety of the Western world suddenly exploding.

Spell check/grammar nazi needed...
By Kevin R. Shadowfire
Pretty good story to be honest, but the frequent errors were a slight put-off. Created a bit of a continuation point at the end, I'd like to see where this goes. He needs a proofreader...
