About the Author

Dan Silber is a game developer who has been credited for Pixel Art on dozens of games with licenses, including Marvel, Nickelodeon, Pixar, and Disney. His work has appeared on games that span multiple platforms including PC, Nintendo DS, and GBA. In addition to working with Pixel Art, he is a programmer, musician, and accomplished 3D Artist―with work that has appeared in an exhibit in the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum. Dan owns the game development studio Interstellar Tortoise and has written several indie games.

Wonderfully illustrated, it covers many different aspects of pixel ...

This is a book i wish i had 10 years ago. I know that for myself and many other gamedevs i know, art skills are very difficult to master. Silber teaches pixel art with an exact, technical manner that my computer-esque mind can understand and put into practice. Wonderfully illustrated, it covers many different aspects of pixel art - really just about anything you would need. Characters, backgrounds, animations, color palettes, and software are all discussed in a straightforward way. Having never dealt very much with pixel art in the games I work on, I'm now taking a second look at the form, especially after the great arguments Silber gives in favor of it.

Good, But A Bit Pricey

Great book, with lots of good information, and the author has a good background in Pixel Art. However, the price seems a bit too steep for the size and information this book contains. It is, however, really the only book of it's kind.

I wish the interviews were a bit more in-depth, and not so short, especially since they were artists for some very well known, beautiful games. The book could have also been a lot more hands-on.

A practical guide for pixel art creation

Silber cuts a lot of the fat from other art books by giving practical advice for pixel artists to use. This is a cheat sheet for many of the common problems in pixel art that most books overlook (what tools do I use, how should I approach palettes, how do I blend between pixels, etc). Fundamentals in perspective, color theory and design are detailed in the text as an introduction for further study.

Much of the content is structured to walk the reader through the creation of in-game assets, rather than a single portrait or illustration. For the developer, this book gives insight into how to create an effective pipeline for video game art that is efficient and aesthetically appealing. While the diagrams in the book are not astounding, it provides the tools for analysis to study other artists (Paul Robertson, Joakim Sandberg, etc).

In the end, this is a book every game developer and pixel artist should have in their library. It gives practical, down-to-earth advice for efficient game development.

Following the accidental death of their middle son, the Kellaways, a Dorsetshire chair maker and family, arrive in London's Lambeth district during the anti-Jacobin scare of 1792. Thomas Kellaway talks his way into set design work for the amiable circus impresario Philip Astley, whose fireworks displays provide the same rallying point that the guillotine is providing in Paris. Astley's libertine horseman son, John, sets his sights on Kellaway's daughter, Maisie (an attention she rather demurely returns). Meanwhile, youngest surviving Kellaway boy Jem falls for poor, sexy firebrand Maggie Butterfield. Blake, who imagined heaven and hell as equally incandescent and earth as the point where the two worlds converge, is portrayed as a murky Friar Laurence figure whose task is to bind and loosen the skeins of young love going on around him—that is, until a Royalist mob intrudes into his garden to sound out his rather advanced views on liberty, equality and fraternity. Tracy Chevalier's latest novel paints a colorful, compelling portrait of 18th-century London: the teeming streets, bawdy pubs, filthy factories, working-class homes, and the political unease generated by the French Revolution. Yet setting alone doesn't create a novel, and critics agree that Burning Bright lacks a compelling set of characters and, for the most part, devolves into a formulaic plot. The biggest problem is Blake himself: Chevalier never manages to successfully connect him to the young protagonists' adventures; nor does she capture Blake's psychological contradictions and depth. Entertainment and history lite, this novel "isn't exactly burning bright," concludes the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Chevalier made a considerable popular and critical splash with her 2000 novel Girl with a Pearl Earring, based on seventeenth-century Dutch painter Vermeer's model for his painting of that name. It was a precise, elegant evocation of Renaissance Delft, and readers who expect the same kind of atmospheric reconstruction of place in her new novel will not be disappointed; eighteenth-century London, from its shadier neighborhoods to its more elegant areas, arises from these pages in all its cacophony. But where the previous novel moved speedily, this one bogs down in plot inertia. The premise: a family of very modest means moves to the British capital from the countryside; the father of the family, a chair maker, has impressed circus impresario Philip Astley, during his tour of the counties, with his abilities and consequently received an invitation to come to London to join the circus as builder of all sorts of things. This family tale settles for the most part on the shoulders of the two youngest children, a boy and a girl, and a girl they befriend, who introduces them to the byways of the great metropolis. A neighbor of the new-to-the-city family is the famous real-life poet William Blake, but his role in the story never seems to gel. Regardless of its drawbacks, expect considerable demand. Brad Hooper

a strong message

Chevalier sets her sights on the poet, mystic, and engraver William Blake in London during the year 1792. Blake is an odd duck. The story is told from the viewpoints of some neighbors, in particular, two families, one recently moved from the country (the INNOCENT) and a streetwise and hardened family (the EXPERIENCED).

Thus we have the metaphor for Blake's great work SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND EXPERIENCE. The French Revolution was underway and King George was terrified that his subjects would rebel against him. Mobs circulated collecting signatures on loyalty oaths. This excessive and intimidating barrage of bogus patriotism is eerily reminiscent of some of the things we saw in this country after 9/11. Do you remember all the cars with flags?

It's a lovely story and she tells it well. Is it GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING? No. Should it be? No. An author should not have to wear her most successful book like a millstone around her neck.

Enjoy it for itself.

Story falls flat

I finished this book quickly, it held my attention well enough but I kept waiting for the plot to "kick in" and it never did. The ending was a complete let down. In fact, after I read the book, I kept wondering what the point of the book was-it really wasn't about William Blake who was portrayed as more of a backdrop. It just seemed to be a a year's chronicle of a small section of neighbors in London preceding the French Revolution. Other than Maggie, the characters were flat and somewhat undeveloped...you wanted to know and care about them, but it just never happened. Extremely disappointing book from a very good writer.

What's in the middle?

Tracy Chevalier is a skilled writer whose novels have all been historical, built around a famous personage from the chosen time period. In Burning Bright, that person is William Blake, the rather mystical English poet/philosopher/engraver, but his presence is intermittent. This novel focuses upon two late-18th century London families, one newly arrived from Dorset and the other more established. Both are poor, struggling to get by, and the plot is built around the adolescent children of these families. Characterization is one of Chevalier's strengths, and Maisie, Jem, and Maggie quickly charm the reader, while others, notably John Astley (the dastardly villain of the piece), Charlie, and the bigoted landlady. Circus folk, pub denizens, washerwomen, and the like add plenty of dash and color. A feel for life in London during the French Revolution quickly develops. Thematically, the concepts of opposites, the conundrum of what's in the middle of each opposing pair, and the drive toward symmetry, are all recurrent ideas, taken from Blake's own work.
Burning Bright provides hours of intelligent, pleasurable, and at times, thought provoking reading.

Perfect blend of practical MINITAB and theoretical Six Sigma

Immanuel Kant, the great German philosopher, once said that "experience teaches nothing without theory, but theory without experience is mere intellectual play". In my opinion, he might as well have been referring to this text by Henderson, since it is the perfect blend of practical MINITAB and theoretical Six Sigma. Graphical and textual MINITAB output is interspersed abundantly alongside discussions on how to use the software appropriately. The many example illustrations are extremely helpful to the most novice Six Sigma practitioner, but this text can be used far beyond Green Belt training. Henderson discusses data analysis, statistical models, control charts, process capability, and process experimentation etc while always providing the statistical formulas that MINITAB uses behind the user interface to enable readers advanced understanding of the software in case they are interested. Occasionally, the author includes diagrams that are not creatable by MINITAB (e.g. the power curve for the statistical test in his chapter on process experimentation with a single factor), but he promptly discloses such situations. Well recommended!

Six Sigma Quality Improvement with Minitab - Excellent Learning Tool!

This book is great! I'm working on my black belt certification and own a copy of Minitab as a result of this training. Being new to both made the discovery of this book a truly wonderful find! I have gained experience with hands on activities and am more confident of the work I'm doing in my certification training. Excellent book! If you do not have a copy, you will be happy if you pick it up!

Statistical Quality tools

Easy to read, the Control process quality tools are explained with a good detail. DoEs and RSM are not so in details but they are a bit out of the scope of the book. You can reach the files of the excercise by dowloading them from the Internet site, so there is no need to "add more weight" with a CD. Reading it, it is not wasting your time.
