The perfect companion guide to the voice

In college, the gentleman I studied voice with was one of Reid's students. He mentioned three books that were to become my vocal bibles: Voice: Psyche and Soma, Bell Canto, and The Free Voice. From the moment I purchased these books, my whole outlook on singing changed--and for the better. Suddenly, everything fell into place for me. I finally understood why people like Pavarotti were in a small select group of singers; they didn't learn to sing overnight by pushing their voices through pieces they couldn't handle.
The Free Voice isn't going to teach you how to sing, but it will help you understand how the voice works. I would suggest if you are searching for a voice teacher, you read this book first and then 'audition' teachers based on what this book has to say. If the teacher is against the theories and methods of this book, they obviously don't know what they are doing and you should move on.
All of the knowledge contained in this book was written by a man who never made it to the sixth grade and who doesn't sing (I got this info from his student, my teacher). Reid is a genius.

About the Author

Anand Halve is the co-founder and Director of chlorophyll brand & communications consultancy, Mumbai, India. Prior to this, he was on the Board of Enterprise Nexus Communications, and has worked at Lowe Lintas and Rediffusion. He did his MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India, in 1977. He has also been a visiting faculty at Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad and IIM, Ahmedabad, for several years.

At chlorophyll, he has been instrumental in the development of copyrighted branding models and brand development processes. His experience as an entrepreneur has been featured as one of the case studies in Rashmi Bansal’s bestseller, Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish, which published by IIM, Ahmedabad in 2008. Halve also contributes to various online and print media, including Hindustan Times, Campaign India magazine, afaqs.com and exchange4media.com.

Halve is the author of Planning for Power Advertising: A User’s Manual for Students and Practitioners (2005).

A lovely compilation of Indian brands

(I bought this book in India, from Flipkart. While it's a great book, the $37 Amazon price is ridiculous.)

With plenty of international brand case studies, what was really missing was a study on Indian brands. This is a good showcase by one of the leading writers in the space.

Thoroughly enjoyable with plenty of little 'stories' (especially the one on how Taste The Thunder came about or how Verghese Kurien stuck behind Da Cunha Communications), it tracks stories of iconic Indian brands like Thums Up, Hero, AirTel, Maruti and many more.

Probably a must-read if you're in the marketing-advertising space in India, a very decent read even otherwise.

Only downsides? The last few brands (Femina, Airtel) seemed a little rush to me, there weren't as many 'stories' or themes of adaptability as in the case of the previous brands, and they somehow seemed to me to be a bit of a 'filler'.

I'd have also loved to see some 'less obvious' brands, perhaps a Bisleri, and perhaps a small section on Indian brands that have failed (Onida Candy, the killing of Kelvinator, etc). That would have probably made the book complete and provided a complete learning. But perhaps, that's something that Halve has in store for us in Part 2.

About the Author
Philip Permutt (www.thecrystalhealer.co.uk) is the author of several books, including The Little Pocket Book of Crystal Tips & Cures, The Little Pocket Book of Crystal Chakra Healing, The Complete Guide to Crystal Chakra Healing, and The Crystal Tarot, all published by CICO Books. He also writes a regular magazine column for Fate & Fortune magazine, as well as contributing to other magazines. Philip discovered crystals almost 25 years ago, after a severe illness, and has been practicing as a crystal healer and teacher ever since. He owns a successful retail and wholesale business importing crystals from around the world, runs crystal courses and workshops, and has lectured on crystal healing and pain relief as a visiting lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire. He also has an honors degree in Applied Biology and has recorded several meditation and workshop albums (Paradise Music). He lives in Hertfordshire, UK, with his wife, Lyn.

Wonderful!

I am a Crystal Therapist, so I love to find books that talk about crystals, give detailed descriptions, uses, and other information about them. (I love crystals and stones in general, so another reason why I love finding great books on them)
I have several crystal books and I have to say I am most happy I found this book! I ordered it, along with the new edition of The Book Of Stones and have absolutely fell in love. For the size of this book it has a great amount of information, uses, and pictures of crystals and stones.
I am very pleased about the pictures; the pictures are somewhat small, but they are nice up-close and clear shots. There is not an example of both the natural and polished stones for each one, but the picture quality is excellent.
The book also talks about choosing a pendulum, cleansing stones/crystals, choosing the stones/crystals, and several other topics.
Chaper 4 is what I say is one of the best features about this book. It talks about crystal remedies; first it lists different physical ailments and the stones/crystals that would be helpful. Next is remedies for emotional ailments, examples of them and stones/crystals that would be helpful to them. Last there is a section for spiritual enhancement; it lists examples and what stones/crystals would be most helpful to you in regards to it.
Out of the other crystal books I have that list remedies, I really love how this book was formatted. Having an entire chapter deticated to various remedies is fantastic. It was easy to read though and also just as easy to find what I was looking for.
I really recommend this book and I honestly wish I had found it a lot sooner. If I had found this book right away, I have about two or three other crystal books I wouldn't have purchased!

Exactly what I'd hoped for. Clearly organized, lots of info, engaging photos and graphics. Everyone interested in learning more about crystals should own this book. I've read through it many times. There are other books with more detail/crystals, but this is more than enough for most of us. User-friendly!

Love conquers the haze that life brings

Isla is a delight. Beautiful. Talented. Innocent. Young. Independent. Committed to her goals. She's also been exploited and defrauded by the mother who should have loved her and grieves for the grandmother who did. Gabriel falls for her the minute he sees her. How could he not. Oh, how I love Gabriel Foster. He's just too freaking Hot! The chemistry between him & Isla is so smoldering, I couldn't get enough. I waited months for this book, and Deborah did not disappoint! I've read everything Deborah has written, and am in love with her literary brilliance. So looking forward to Torn, and reading about the youngest Foster brother Asher. #lovethosefostermen

A Refreshing Read

This is something I have not read in a while. A straight forward romance story with no nefarious villains in the backround or guns blazing. The story is told by alternating between Gabriel and Isla so you get both points of view in what is happening. Gabriel Foster is the CEO of Foster Enterprises which is a huge family owned business and Isla is a store clerk working in one of his lingerie shops. The worst thing you could say about Gabriel is that he goes through a multitude of women as a release for tension and sex, never getting too emotionally involved with any until he meets Isla. Isla is working toward the goal of going to school to become a professional violinist. The author manages to develop both characters to the extent you know them and are drawn into the story caring about them which makes the sex scenes blazing hot enough to combust my Kindle. Even with as many romance stories as I have read, this story came across as fresh and caught my interest and I know how much I liked this book when I came to the end and wanted to continue reading more about Gabriel and Isla. An unbelievable bargain at $2.99-you can't go wrong.

Sally Engle Merry is Silver Professor of Anthropology at New York University. She is the author and editor of nine books, including the J. Willard Hurst Prize-winning Colonizing Hawai'i: The Cultural Power of Law (2000). Her most recent book is Governance by Indicators (2012, co-edited with Kevin Davis, Angelina Fisher and Benedict Kingsbury).

Kevin E. Davis is Beller Family Professor of Business Law and Vice Dean at New York University School of Law. He has written extensively about anti-corruption law as well as the relationship between law and economic development in such journals as the American Journal of Comparative Law, the Law and Society Review, and the New York University Law Review.

Benedict Kingsbury is Murry and Ida Becker Professor of Law and director of the Institute for International Law and Justice at New York University School of Law. In addition to being co-Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of International Law he is the editor and co-editor of over fifteen books, including International Financial Institutions and Global Legal Governance (2011).

Set in the 1980s in Dublin,City Girl is a story of three women living in a chauvinist world and struggling to gain their freedom and independence from men.The novel develops three main threads,corresponding to the stories of Devlin,Caroline and Maggie,three young women portraied in two distinct periods of their youth. Scanlan snatches the physical and psycological portraits of the three girls and the society they live in with considerable descriptive skill. Devlin is beautiful,rich,immature and spoilt.She falls in love with a married man,who uses her,gets her pregnant and leaves her an unmarried mother.But a life full of shocking events makes her a completely different person in a few years'time. Caroline is fat,shy,totally lacking in self-confidence and self-esteem.She is terrified at the idea of being left manless.But marriage is no satisfactory solution to her problems.On the contrary,once married,she becomes an alcohol and drug-addict to escape from an unbearable reality.Then she discovers her husband's long-hidden secret and her life takes a sudden change. Maggie is the most rebellious and non-conformist of the three.Beautiful,strong,independent-minded,she lives life to the full until she eventually yields to the patriarchal law and gives up her independence by marrying a man who epitomizes the most deep-rooted chauvinism. The three girls are close friends and through all the troubles of life they can find peace in their friendship. A chauvinist,gossipy,narrow-minded Dublin provides the social sorroundings to the story.Dubliners and Irish people in general are described as hypocrit and intolerant. Scanlan writes in an informal,contemporary style,which is rich in realistic dialogues,colloquialisms and dialectal expressions.The structure of the novel is also interesting:the story is a flashback in six episodes,framed by a prologue and an epilogue,which contain information about the conclusion of the three girls' adventures.A good device to create suspense and grasp the reader's attention. Nevertheless,I found that the characters are rather "flat",that is to say they act exactly as the reader expects them to do.Some commonplaces do not spoil an unpretentious but well-written novel.

A really wonderful book once one is able to understand it. Set in Ireland the phrases are a bit hard to understand at first, but once over that the book is great. A must read for all women wondering what to do with there lives. The book gave me a lot of inspiration
