Wonderful book

We went to Milan and the Lakes last year. This, as are all DK books, is a wonderful visual presentation of the area. They are also great books for dreamers, who just don't travel, but dream of the day they will. I think there are better tour books that provide more details on hotels/restaurants/transportation, etc., but you cannot get the visual feel of a place any better than through the DK books. I always supplement the DK books with a Steves' or Fodor book, as those books do provide down to earth, necessary details for a trip. If you are investing in a dream vacation, buy this book as well as another - these books, even after the trip, will provide visual memories that no other travel book can.

A lot packed into a little book. There's a lot to see in the Milan area and a lot of history outside of the main Galleria area, which is not covered as well as could be in book. Nonetheless, the history and ideas were helpful. My suggestion is read through the book and organize your visit to the area as the majority of the sites are downtown; from there, your travels to the lakes, etc., will take some planning.

This book was updated for 2013, so it has the latest info on Milan. Of course, the pictures and illustrations that come with all DK books make it a most enjoyable reference tool. The slim design makes it ideal for traveling.

Excellent overview of ecological genetics!

I am a graduate student studying behavioral ecology. I have taken courses in ecological genetics and evolutionary ecology. Most professors don't use a text book of any sort when teaching on these topics. This book is an excellent reference for learning the fundamentals about these topics. It includes current and classic examples from the primary literature as well as a carefully constructed glossary of terms. I highly recommend this resource to both professors teaching courses to upper level undergraduates and graduate students!

Easy to Understand Textbook

This is a great textbook that could easily be used in any evolution or genetics class. It clearly describes issues like evolution and natural selection in the context of ecological genetics. The examples are interesting and stay in the reader's mind, and the problem sets and online answers are a great resource. This book also serves as a handy reference guide anytime you need to find a formula or definition. It's appropriate for upper level undergraduate courses or introductory graduate courses.

About the Author

Marketing communications pioneer and Advertising Hall of Fame inductee Tom Burrell is credited with revolutionizing the image of African Americans in television and changing the face of American advertising. His award-winning work promoted positive and realistic images of blacks and acknowledged the purchasing power of the African American community. Burrell is the founder of The Resolution Project,�a nonprofit organization that promotes intra-racial dialogue and community-based new media “stop the brainwash” campaigns. He lives in Chicago’s South Loop area.

A Book that changes how you see things

After reading Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority, I have but one regret; It has challenged my role as a passive observer. It's now hard to laugh at black comedians and rappers who carelessly use the N-word or endorse sexual promiscuity and violence. I can no longer dismiss the impact of black films or TV shows that exaggerate black pathologies and buffoonery. With disturbing clarity, the author draws connections between what's deemed "black entertainment" today and what was yesteryear's promotion of vile, demeaning, violent and debased black stereotypes. From "Relationship Wrecks" to "Neo-Coons" and every chapter in between, Burrell details a masterful 18th Century propaganda campaign that has effectively imbedded the notion of black inferiority and white superiority in society. With concentrated focus, the author shows how blacks, as well as whites, have been unconsciously conditioned to expect black inadequacies. Not satisfied with simply identifying this insidious campaign, the author, a former advertising executive, compassionately details a "New Media" strategy aimed at reclaiming black minds and communities. There have been many authors (Norman Coombs, E. Franklin Frazier, bell hooks) who have explored the psychological damage wrought by slavery and oppression. Burrell's approach from an advertising/marketing perspective, however, offers valuable perspective in an increasingly media-driven and dominated society.

"Post-racial" America? - Here's why not.

Once I began to read Brainwashed by Tom Burrell it was difficult to put down. His explanation of how the purposeful destruction of slave families 150+ years ago has evolved into a self-perpetuating cycle that, if left unchecked, insures continued enslavement for years to come, is powerful. Burrell convincingly rebuts arguments that say the Black family was restored during reconstruction and that its decay is of more recent origin. Brainwashed invites the reader to check your guilt, leave your defenses at the door, and allow yourself to consider that we can all make choices to both be free and set each others free. As a professor of multicultural counseling at a Midwestern university, I added the book to my recommended reading list before I was halfway through reading it. I have also ordered a copy for the school library. This is a must read for those who long for a truly "post-racial" America.

Emotional Freedom for Black People!

I have purchased multiple copies of Brainwashed to share with my family and friends, and I intend to buy many more. This is a must-read book for Black people--and everybody else. There is a growing grassroots movement for emotional healing and renewal for Black people in this country and around the world. As part of the Community Healing Network, a group working for emotional freedom for Black people, I can report that Brainwashed is already at the top of our list of recommended readings. It is an important addition to the body of work describing the historical roots of so much of the pain we see and feel in Black communities today. Touching on nearly every area of Black life--from our physical and mental health to the health of our interpersonal, family, and community relationships, and more--Burrell shows how each has been undermined by the myth of Black inferiority. Along the way, he shares insights that can help us help ourselves. Brainwashed shows how the myth of Black inferiority has been skillfully marketed throughout American history and proposes a bold and creative campaign of reverse marketing to help change how we see ourselves and how the world sees us. What makes this book so important, from my point of view, is Burrell's focus on action through his Resolution Project, which is designed to use the media to replace the toxic messages that are part and parcel of the myth with new and positive images of Black people. Tom Burrell has made an indispensable contribution with the gift of an excellent resource for movement-building--and with his commitment, as a marketing expert, to use marketing to change the image of Black people.

Wodehouse at his hilarious best

Though Jeeves is the most famous of Wodehouse characters, the character I love the most is Lord Emsworth. This poor earl, when all he needs is some peace and some time with his precious pig, "the empress of blandings", is always dragged into family affairs, which are of no interest to him by his ever dominant "sisters". This book has one of the best stories about Blandings Castle, "Crime wave at Blandings". You will split your sides laughing with this story. All the other stories are equally good and "The Efficient Baxter", secretary to Lord Emsworth makes a comeback here. This book is an absolute must to any Wodehouse fan and absolutely the most recommended book for readers new to Wodehouse. This was the first book I read of Wodehouse and I read it 20 times before putting it aside. A book definitely worth collecting.

Wodehouse at His Best -- And No Jeeves in Sight!

This collection of short stories begins with one about the title character, Lord Emsworth, a constantly befuddled old man who only wants to putter away his time if only his energetic relatives would let him. Though not my favorite Emsworth saga, this one is excellently written and endlessly hilarious. All the other stories are similarly well done, but they all begin to meld together somehow. I would have preferred more variety in the approach. If you read this (and you should!), I recommend one story at a time, and allow some good space between stories. Use an episode perhaps as a palate cleanser between each of those long lugubrious novels you insist on reading. That way you'll get the max out of the book, and every story will remain distinctive.

Fun with an airgun.

Mix yourself a hot Scotch and lemon and dive in. Emsworth is at his finest when confronted with the horrific possibility that he may be forced to take The Efficient Baxter on as his secretary again. Also there is a Mulliner tale, 3 golf stories as related by the the Oldest Member and 3 Ukridge stories. Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge has as usual tried everything to raise a few quid -- including renting his aunt's house while she is away in Hollywood, training Battling Billson the prize-fighter and pawning his aunt's diamond brooch. The funniest is the Emsworth story, while the others seem more like unfinished sketches that Master Plum (Wodehouse) was toying with.

Explore The Mind of Reason

Mark Twain expressed it best when he wrote the following lines to his wife in 1879:

"I've just come to my room, Livy darling, I guess this was the memorable night of my life. By George, I never was so stirred since I was born. I heard [a speech] by that splendid old soul, Col. Bob Ingersoll,--oh, it was just the supremest combination of English words that was ever put together since the world began."

Mark Twain embodied the hearts and minds of many American's with these words, for indeed, Robert Ingersoll was very well known and was a mangificent orator and politician. People travelled for miles to hear his speeches, where attendance was standing room only. Quite often, Col. Ingersoll's speeches ran for three hours or more (which he committed to memory and recited without use of notes), yet people would stay for the entire presentation, totally enthralled and hanging on his words. The time was the late 1800's and it was the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Freethought in America.

Now, it isn't surprising, really, why the name Robert Ingersoll has slipped quietly into the history books with most people today having never heard of his name. Robert Ingersoll was an agnostic and quite often spoke on the subjects of religion and God. His views were considered offensive and heretic by many, but to many others his words rang with clear reason and logic and commanded the attention of all who heard his words. Quite often, the press would ridicule him and paint him in an unfavorable light, often citing the religious ire and condemnation of those who could not answer the questions he presented, but wished his voice to be silenced nonetheless. But Robert Ingersoll was also a rationalist, a free thinker, and he advocated and preached the doctrine of reason, logic and science. He implored that all men should think for themselves and not fall victim to the mindless banter of tradition or religious dogma. Clearly, he was offensive to some, but to many he was the voice of reason and clear thought.

Ingersoll was a visionary and was ahead of his time on many subjects. He was an abolitionist who was opposed to all forms of human slavery and who was a very ardent supporter of women's rights and the right for women to vote. And although he held no belief in the supernatural or in God, he was very moral and upstanding and would serve as a fine example today to the politicians who make a mockery of our Constitution and our civil liberties. Ingersoll was a republican and the Attorney General of Illinois and his popularity was so high and his name so well known, he was repeatedly asked to run for Governor of Illinois. Unfortunately, there was one problem. Even though the Constitution states that no man shall be required to profess a belief in any religion to be eligible to hold positions within the government, the church and the influence of religious dogma in this country had grown to a point that any man who would dare say that he was agnostic or atheist would never receive the support of any political party to run for high office. He was asked to publicly recant his beliefs so that he could run for office, to which he adamantly refused by stating:

"Good-by, gentlemen! I am not asking to be Governor of Illinois ... I have in my composition that which I have declared to the world as my views upon religion. My position I would not, under any circumstances, not even for my life, seem to renounce. I would rather refuse to be President of the United States than to do so. My religious belief is my own. It belongs to me, not to the State of Illinois. I would not smother one sentiment of my heart to be the Emperor of the round world."

Many of Ingersoll's views and opinions will be seen as harsh by those who hold dear to a religious faith. But that is not reason enough to silence the words and thoughts of this man. He presents many interesting arguments and reasons worthy of discussion and ponderation. It is sad that just because a man who holds a view outside the norm of the mainstream that he should be forgotten and silenced as an infidel or a heretic. Sadly, even to this very day, any man who openly professes to have no religion or no belief in God is still ostracized and cannot hope to serve in any high political office in the land of the free. Ingersoll quite often pointed out that unless a man uses his mind to think for himself, he will always be a slave to those who tell him what to think and what to believe.

This book provides an interesting insight to our history about a man and an era in history that was born not out of superstition, but out of reason and logic and the desire to think. Certainly, this book will not be for everyone, but whether you agree with Ingersoll's opinions or not is irrelevant. The fact remains that this is a page out of our American history books that should be dusted off and looked at again. Ingersoll made some amazing predictions that came true and still offers today some thoughts and ideals that are worthy of discussion that are relevant to our current world and society. This book is but merely a collection of speeches from Ingersoll and will serve as a good introduction to the body of his work.

America - Please give us another Ingersoll

If American children were required to read Robert Ingersoll, the world would be a safer place to be. His warmth and commonsense shine through everything he has ever written. His speeches are clear and insightful, and particularly relevant with much of America caught in the climate of fear stemming from the religious fervour that has engulfed them.

His writings show that a moral life has no connection with a religious belief. I confess I would give any book relating to Ingersoll's writings 5 stars as I have never found a speech of his that wasn't witty, good natured and exhibited great intelligence. His technique of always attacking the belief not the believer demonstrates his generous spirit.

Fascinating!

Both fascinating and enlightening, this book should be read by everyone as food for thought, if nothing else. It's a shame Robert Ingersoll's words of wisdom aren't more widely known. I'm glad we at least have this collection.
