Gringo Viejo no tiene el mismo estilo de La Muerte de Artemio Cruz, es m�s ligero. El libro nos lleva a conocer las fronteras u obstaculos que tiene cada uno de los personajes y las de ambas culturas: Norteamericana y Mexicana. En lo personal me gustar�a un final distinto. Si alguien quisiera comentarlo personalmente mande un mail.

Barely OK, try his short stories instead

I really wanted to enjoy this novel and I have read other short stories by Fuentes that are excellent. Additionally, I'm a big fan of Ambrose Bierce and was hoping that this novel would be a remarkable experience for me as the reader. It was not. The "Old Gringo" really could have been any old gringo and Fuentes fails to fully develop the Bierce character. There are some references to his writing, but the connection is not powerful enough so he comes across as a mere gringo stereotype. There are some interesting commentaries about the USA/Mexican relationship and sometimes Fuentes is on the brink of writing a masterpiece, but it never fully gels together and the result is a confusing and uneven narrative. I will try "La muerte de Artemio Cruz" but I'm hoping that it's a more positive experience than this one. I must also add that the sex scenes in the narrative are inconsistent with the higher, literary language that Fuentes employs throughout the narrative, so they are out of place and awkward.

Arkansas DOES play a big part in our history.

The history of Arkansas is richly detailed in this book as a meeting place for every great change in US history. It’s a humorous story, because some of the supposedly Native American names are actually corruptions of French ones. The French trappers were here before the English speaking settlers, but they were merely after the furs and not interested in farming the land, so they left few marks. Arkansas was a perfect trading post because it sat where two rivers met, and the Natives would trade furs and smoked buffalo meat (ribs were especially popular) for cloth, tools, and weapons.

!830-1865 was a turbulent era, thanks to Indian Removal and then the Civil War. In between were years of violent conflict between pro and anti-slavery forces. Even after the was was over there was conflict between black and white laborers for jobs on the plantations. Freed slaves and their descendants crowded into Little Rock because they were safe from attacks by white mobs, while in the country they were scattered and vulnerable. If Arkansas weren’t the meeting place for major rivers, it probably wouldn’t have much of a history.

Up into the 1950’s it would be the scene of even more famous change, like the Little Rock Nine in 1957, Bill Clinton, Creation v Evolution, Pro-Choice v Pro-Life. Arkansas’ geographic position is no longer as important as it used to be, but it will always be a lynchpin for US history.

Calico Trail

This is an excellent traditional western buddy book.

Ruben, Homer, Marion and some new friends take on a cattle baron from England to stop his heavy handed aquisition and control of the cattle business in Calico County. As usual with David Lewis' characters there is some subtle interactive humor among the characters and some downright hilarious moments.

Don't get me wrong though, this is a story of a determined group of lawmen out to right some wrongs and they are not hesitant to use violent and sometimes brutal means to accomplish their goal.

I recommend this book and series to anyone who likes traditional westerns with plenty of action and characters you learn to know and like.

I started with the Nodaway trail and just finished the Trail series. I have to start with the Characters. From Marion, Reuben and Homer to Verlon you have to love their straight forward approach to what's right as opposed to what's the law say. Although they follow the law as best they can they are smart, tough and fearless in the eyes of what's bad. Now maybe it's because I hail from southern Kansas and halfway speak the way David writes 'but I durn near love his witin' style. Although I struggled with the intro of Cajun talk in Payback. The ongoing speak of how to eat on the trail vs the small cafes is intriguing and brings the West to life. These are simple people but complex in their understandin' of life and how much truth and honor play into the best that life has to offer. This past year I have read some 30 western authors and I am willing to standup for David Lewis as I say that I rate him as one of the very best western authors out there. Thanks for taking me down the trail with Reuben and Marion.

I have read western books all my life and found few authors that could compare to Louis L"amour but this comes close. To clarify, the books are not on the level of L'amour's best books like the Sackets or his best novels but his writing is good. The language in these books are clean enough that you could recommend them to people that prefers not to read cussing or sexual details in their book. The Longarm series comes to mind that just had too much graphical sex even though the plots were entertaining and captivating. If you were in Law enforcement such as myself you will enjoy these books and appreciate how they are written in clean language. If this author continues to develop his plots and add more suspense and maybe a little less repetition of things especially when describing tasks at the end of each day on the trail, then he will be one of the greats. The author has a very thorough understanding of horses and saddles, harness etc. and if you are knowledgeable in these areas you will appreciate his details. As a Law enforcement officer I appreciated the main characters in the book who get to handle the bad guys in the ways of the old west that many of us just wished could have been done in these modern times where we are restricted by the code of criminal procedures and court rulings etc. that many times favors the criminal and allows him or her to continue to commit crimes and prey on innocents to the detriment of society. This book is not what I expected. It's for students out to learn to write SOFTWARE that runs physics computations. Did I return it? No. I have a grandson interested in learning to write software. I'll just give it to him. ( : > )

The book assumes you'll already an expert programmer in matlab. The examples are confusing and the sample code usually isn't helpful.

Not sure who this book was written for

I am very disappointed with this book. It is not written for physics students, because there is no discussion on physics. And it's not written for a student learning how to code Matlab. I guess the intended audience are people who are very experienced with Matlab and who want to learn how to code physics problems?????? The only audience I can gather are computer science majors doubling in mathematics and getting a minor in physics? I have learned VERY little from this book. I don't even know how to write a for loop after two and a half months. The authors assume I already know everything they are talking about in this book...Oh, that's right, I forgot I already learned everything I need to know about recursive series in my freshman year of college! Of course, one sentence is plenty of explanation!! The presentation is extremely formal, and I really don't know who gave these authors the OK to call it an introductory book. That is hardly the case!
