Grammar Rulz has become the way my students start class every day. It is a fantastic student-led activity for middle-school students because they get to spend the first minutes of class thinking about and looking critically at language. And the students look forward to it as much as I do. This is by far the best daily language program I have ever encountered. I love the fact that I can just project it on the whiteboard, kids can come up and correct it, and then we can instantly click to the next page to check the work. This book/CD-ROM provides brief daily exercises, organized by four six-week units, asking students to find and correct 12 grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors in short selections on historical periods. About the Author
Erik Ortman is a middle-school teacher with more than twelve years of classroom experience. He currently teaches a seventh-grade language arts/social studies blended class and eighth-grade language arts at the American International School in Buenos Aires. He has wide experience integrating language arts with social studies and teaching with technology.

Highly recommended! Aweosme, practical classroom resource!

I use Grammar Rulz with my 7th graders and it is the perfect way to start each class. The students look forward to it, and as a Humanities teacher, I think it's an ideal tool for teaching grammar and conventions in context, not to mention an excellent way to get the students focused and ready to learn.
The students love the fact that they have a concrete number of conventions errors to look for, and that they can come up to either the white board or the SMART board to make the corrections after they have made them on their own papers. And, I love the fact that I can lead in to teaching mini-lessons about rules of punctuation, capitalization and usage. Later, I can connect those same lessons to their own writing.
In addition, each set of lessons is a story filled with elements of high interest for middle schoolers. While studying medieval Europe in Social Studies class, students get a story filled with romance and intrigue about the Middle Ages for their daily grammar work. They love it.
Each lesson takes only a few minutes, but can be expanded as needed to further discuss the rules associated with the lesson of the day. Each lesson also contains a vocabulary word, and a chance to differentiate instruction for students who need a little extra challenge.
In short, I cannot imagine my Language Arts class without this invaluable tool!

Grammar Rulz Rules!

Grammar Rulz is a highly interactive and fun way to learn grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. It is hard to imagine a more user-friendly and effective way to work on these concepts.
The activity is divided in a series of one page entries or paragraphs, each one needing exactly twelve corrections. Each page is followed by a grammar rule and short exercise directly related to the corrections. The students quickly develop a sense of routine and look forward to it. Since the activity comes with a SMART Board / White Board component, it is highly interactive. The students love to come out to the board and work on the corrections. The activity is envisioned as fun and low-stress, so students look forward to engaging in it. Another feature that I really enjoy is the corrections page which follows each entry. Students enjoy making predictions about the corrections and having a chance to compare their work with the corrections page immediately. The lessons are short, only a few minutes, but can be expanded according to need. They often give me a chance to jump into a mini lesson. Best of all, Grammar Rulz comes with built in assessment and differentiation.
This is a well-designed, effective, and engaging activity. A definite keeper in the intermediate language/humanities classroom!

Great Writing Resource!

The research is clear: If you want kids to learn grammar, teach it in context. That's only one of the strengths of Grammar Rulz!, a book of language exercises that help middle school students master the conventions of writing. The context used - engaging stories set in commonly studied historical periods - fits well at the middle school level, and the exercises can be effectively utilized in both language arts and social studies classrooms.

A unique (and very useful) aspect of this book is the variety of delivery methods available. There's a method for everyone: chalkboard/whiteboard, overhead, and hard copies. The accompanying CD includes files to deliver the exercises via multimedia computer/projector, Mimio interactive systems and SMART boards. Vary your methods and find the one that works best for you and your students.

These fun and efficient exercises benefit all students, but they are particularly helpful to the ESL population. In addition to the clear directions and focused format, the exercises focus on irregular verbs, subject/verb agreement, and common usage issues. Exercises provide rich opportunities for authentic conversations about both language and content.

Clear, balanced, and easy to read

I have to say, when I saw the publisher (High Times) of A Parent's Guide to Marijuana by Mitch Earleywine PhD, I thought it would be pro-drugs. It isn't. It isn't anti-drugs either; it's that rare beast, a balanced and sensible book about an illegal drug. This book, a guide for parents who want to engage with their children about cannabis without lying, bluffing or lecturing, has a lot to recommend it. It is presented as a dialogue between Dr Earleywine and a group of parents he is working with; while remaining conversational and easy to read, it covers the breadth of scientific literature related to risks (and benefits) of pot. Most impressive is Dr Earleywine's knack for presenting fairly complex scientific ideas in ways that are easy for pretty much anyone to grasp. In doing so, the book invites readers to understand and make their own decisions about the science and what it means for them and their kids. By endorsing the middle ground, Dr Earleywine arms parents to talk about marijuana with their children in a more knowledgeable (and hence more credible) way. He offers general suggestions for talking to children about tricky issues, as well as specific information about pot. The book is short, and, importantly for parents, easy to read in small grabs. I would recommend this book as an excellent resource for those who wish to help their children make safe decisions about marijuana and drug use in general.

The Goods on Ganja

Earleywine's new book on the dangers of marijuana for adolescents is accessible in its conversational style, and informative enough to make this reader satisfied she's gotten her money's worth.

Earleywine's studies on marijuana make him one of the country's foremost authorities on the subject. There is no speculation in this work that isn't backed up with hard facts. Although he questions and dispels some popular myths, make no mistake: he is not a marijuana apologist.

Marijuana is dangerous to use during the formative years of adolescence, and Earleywine gives parents the tools to offer this information in a way kids will accept it as viable. Decades of misinformation in drug "education" has left kids suspicious and dismissive of what the experts have to say. It's high time (pardon the pun) there was solid info to impart to our children to help them make the best decision when the time comes to make it.

Not every kid is going to do the smart, reasonable thing, but if I had known this stuff when I was thirteen, I, for one, would not have used.

A Must Read for Parents -- Put My Mind at Ease

I have three kids under the age of 12. One of my biggest fears is facing the challenge of my kids dealing with peer pressure about drugs as they grow up, and worse going down the dark path of addiction. I don't think I am alone. The challenge is to know how to address the issue with compassion, resolve, and with a sobered understanding of the issues, uncontaminated by media hype. This book helped put my mind at ease and gave me some sensible strategies that I think will be of enormous help for me as a parent and for my kids. This book is a must read for parents and caregivers. It will help you and your child face the challenges of smoking pot in a way that upholds your values as a parent and your love for your children. You will be better for it and so will they.

Great book, not so great Amazon

Yet another awesome edition to the AGU series. Thank you Me Deprima for enthralling us again with another fine space opera novel. It's interesting to see how Sydnee Marcola & Jenetta's stories start to come together. Looking forward to the next edition!

The book is deserving of a 5 star, but without a Kindle version some of us may never be able to read it due to draconian Amazon policies, so Amazon deserves a 1 star. I hope Amazon starts treating Mr Deprima with the respect he deserves as an author & we can start getting his books on Kindle again.

About the Author

THOMAS J. DORSEY is cofounder and President of Dorsey, Wright & Associates, LLC, a registered investment advisory firm that specializes in research and investable products based on the Point and Figure method of technical analysis. Formerly a senior vice president and director of Options Strategies with Wheat First Securities, and a stockbroker with Merrill Lynch, Dorsey has become the industry's foremost expert in Point and Figure Charting and teaches this method worldwide. He has appeared on mainstream financial media including Fox News's Cavuto on Business and received the Distinguished Speaker Award from the Wharton School of Finance Securities Industry Association. Mr. Dorsey is also the author of three previous editions of Point and Figure Charting and Commodity Strategies: High-Profit Techniques for Investors and Traders, all published by Wiley.

SARA GIEGERICH is Corporate Counsel to Dorsey, Wright & Associates. Ms. Giegerich began her current role in September of 2011; however, she has been with Dorsey Wright for nearly a decade, having started as an intern in high school. One big advertisement.

This book is quite highly priced, especially since it is primarily an advertisement for their services. The pnf information is covered but you have to wade through all the rhetoric about how great Darcey, Wright & Assoc. and there web site are. If you want to learn about point and figure charting I am sure there are a lot that are more concise and don't inundate you with advertising there services. They do have some good investment strategies that are well worth learning but that should be separate.

Interesting way to chart mutual funds and stocks for longer term buy and sell signals. A nice complement to other technical and fundamental analysis, such as candlesticks or line charts. The author provides an interesting discussion about graphically representing increases in supply vs. demand, and companion indicators based on RS, to determine the direction of solid longer term trends. Easy reading and well written, with good examples.

For seekers of ultimate truth, a theory worth considering, but a great read for even the mildly curious

Today's greatest challenge for physics and cosmology is reconciling Einstein's Theory of Relativity with Quantum Mechanics. Both systems produce profoundly accurate results through thousands of experiments. The problem is that they are not compatible and all attempts to derive a single unified theory have failed. This work by Thad Roberts offers an elegant solution by proposing that spacetime itself is in reality a frictionless super fluid. Written to be understood by the lay reader while providing the theory in substantial detail to the scientist the book is a very enjoyable trip explaining the history of our developing understanding of the universe through the cosmological consequences of a reality composed of quanta. It brings us from our daily lives to 11 dimensional space, what the big bang really was, how dark matter works, and a buffet of other wonderfully interesting aspects of advanced theoretical physics. If you enjoy concepts you will love this book.

but I have a somewhat better grounding in philosophy

I have not finished reading this yet, but I am part way though. My understanding of physics is quite limited, but I have a somewhat better grounding in philosophy. My true passion is social science, and the philosophy of social science. What strikes me most about this work is that it gels very well with theories that I find most compelling in my own discipline. In particular, it seems to fit well with the theories that I find most parsimonious and compelling, but that also have yet to gain widespread acceptance in mainstream cognitive science. This book represents, for me, an honest and deeply creative attempt to respond to the most fundamental questions of any science: the questions of what exists, and how we can know what exists? In addition to tackling deep mysteries, this work also represents a challenge to the politics of knowledge production. Roberts has made a deliberate effort to render accessible a subject matter which is generally understood to be off-limits due to its complexity. So far, I am profoundly impressed with this book!
