Amazing

OMG!!!! This was awesome. I'm a huge male/male fan and I loved this book. It was short and sweet and I really could feel the emotions of the characters. I loved the twist on this Cinderella story. This author has a new fan in me. I can't wait to read more of her books.

This charming retelling of the Cinderella tale gives us a Cinderfella with wonderful period feeling and just enough magic to make it all work.

We all know the premise, but here, the author puts us into the sixteenth century French court, complete with politics, scheming and deception. Our hero has been stripped of his birthright, and in truly wicked fairy tale fashion he’s also been forced to dress and live as a woman. Even his fellow housemaids aren’t too clear that one of these servants is not like the others. Overwork and undernourishment keep our hero slight of frame, so the deception persists.

Fairy godmother turns up, right on cue, to send Cinder to the ball in silks and satins and the obligatory glass slippers, with the usual admonishments, and for the usual reasons. But however shall his Prince deal with the discovery that his princess is no lady?

This does all work out-of course! We need our HEA!-but not before our emotions get yanked all over the place with the additional worry of gender, succession, and some sixteenth century political intrigue. The author is historian enough to make us believe completely in the time and setting, so even though we’ve all known how this story works out since we were six years old, the how and where reads fresh.

We do get to see Prince Charming aka Henri’s POV a bit, and cementing in the HEA. The ending lurched a little for me, but all works out well, and I would happily spend another chilly evening wrapped up in a blanket with this author’s work.

A Cinder-FELLA story!

A fun, gay twist on the Cinderella story....a Cinder-FELLA story actually.
I wasn't sure what to expect with a hero living as a woman in his step-mother's home, but I ended up loving Cinder's humor and innocence. From glass slippers to fairy godmothers, evil step-sisters and Prince Charming, all aspects of the classic tale are there, just with a clever twist for the mm romance reader.
When Cinder goes to the ball in a beautiful gown and meets the prince, I was so nervous for him!!
Without giving anything away, Cinder gets his happily ever after....whether or not he's still wearing dresses though I won't say, LOL.
This is a story I will read again when I am in the mood for fun, lighthearted fairy tale.

Worth every penny

I'm a Journeyman Electrician and I have always found the NEC difficult to manuver through, because it covers so much and the language sometimes can be a bit hard to decipher. This book cuts through all that. This book is better than the NEC Handbook because it taught me why the code is written the way it is, the steps the code panel takes and the "style manual" they use to carefully select just the right words to make the Code as Clear as possible. If I were to give an Electrician a Code Book, I would also give "Applied Codeology" with it.

TRUE MEANING OF A LADY

I loved this story with its mystery, suspense, deceit and secrets. Pierre Bernard needs the inheritance left from his late mother to save the family plantation, Willow, but there are stipulations, he must marry a French lady. Josephine Depardieu grew up in Massachusetts and after the death of both her parents worked as a seamstress at a factory, but when it burns down, she is left with nothing. Many of the other girls are applying to be mail order brides and she does too, answering the ad from Pierre, after all, she speaks French since her father was from France, but can she pull off being a French lady of society? Can Pierre save Willow by marrying Josephine and make it a marriage in name only? Can Josephine accept a loveless and name only marriage? Why is Willow in trouble financially? Will the truth come to light before it is too late? The plot kept me captivated and the pages turning. The dialog is witty and the characters heartwarming. This is a wonderful addition to the American Mail-Order Brides series. Disclosure: I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings are my own.

A wonderful story. I loved Josephine willingness to help save a home she though she did not belong. She was quite the definition of a lady if not truly French. Thrown in a thief and some well placed lies and Mrs. Caldwell has written a winner well worth your time.

Where to start? Let's start with the smaller issues. Some typos and spelling mistakes, as well as whole sentences repeated in following paragraph. Hero and heroine have the same last name the first time their last names are mentioned at the beginning of the book; then the hero's last name is changed to a different last name…
Badly in need of editing.

More serious: poor writing. There's not that much to the story; elements of the storyline seem inflated to look more important than they actually are and fluff out the story. Even the reason for the hero having to marry a French lady is unclear and just doesn't make much sense (even more so at the end of the book). Silly story, silly characters with unlikely reactions. The characters' behavior is often inconsistent and doesn't make much sense. A few examples:
***Some spoilers***
• The hero is not very appealing at first. He appears uncaring, insensitive and self-centered, and shows a lack of consideration and respect for the heroine. For example, he does not even bother to pick her up himself, sends his cousin instead. He talks about sending her back, like one would a package, before even meeting her. But then he's very nice to her once he meets her.
• The biggest sore point in my opinion: the hero closed his heart to love and marriage because it hurt too much when his mother died (seriously?!!) although he was so young when she passed away that he barely remembers her. So he's decided he wants a marriage in name only, which means no children. Hard to believe for a person in his position who has a plantation to pass on to his heirs… He asked a woman to marry him without sharing that important bit of information? Unlikely! Heroine learns from the cousin that the marriage will be in name only, is saddened by that news and the prospect of not having any children but just accepts the situation without reconsidering marrying the hero, even though she still hasn't met him!
• The hero was raised in a household with at least one French parent and a French cook and yet doesn't like French cuisine. He reacts to cheese and sweet breads the same way most people react to chopped liver or snails! Again, unlikely!
• The villain comes to the heroine, tells her some lies and that the hero wants her to leave, and she just believes him, packs up and leaves, even though they shared an excellent evening that very night and the hero was overjoyed about their plans coming to fruition and the upcoming nuptials!

Amazing and love it so much :)

I absolutely fell in love with the characters in this book and the whole unique plot ( typically most story's that deal with a high school are always the same story line being that its focus is the paranormal). However, I feel that at some level this book does share similarities with another novel called Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson because that novel is about a girl who is raped and then she is ostracized by her peers.

I had 40% battery life left in my kindle fire and read this straight through the day( finished it in a few hours). I loved the whole story line and was really sad about Kate's mom having passed away and I knew that it would be a bad idea for Kate to become involved with the popular crowd ( aka the basketball players). There is almost an unspoken rule that once you become involved with a popular person than if someone goes wrong that person walks away unharmed and the consequences fall on your head.

By the way everyone that plays basketball at Beacon Prep is considered to be treated like Gods and can get away with anything ( lie, cheat etc.). So with Kate's dad being the basketball coach she gets treated like royalty ( aka everyone will try to get nice with her to fulfill their own purposes of hooking up with the other teammates). Kate's brother Brett wasn't like Kate and didn't try to blend in with all of the popular kids ( as a result everyone makes fun of him). He abhorred his new school and constantly got into fights against their dad because he didn't like how their dad no longer really cared about them. I won't tell you what he chooses to do but I really wasn't surprised of the path he chose ( hint hint military recruiters at school).

Brett was the best brother that Kate could possibly have and he really cared about her when her father didn't really pay any attention to them. Even when some huge conflict came up, Brett was there for Kate and would have done anything for her. Brett matured so much because their own father wasn't really there for Kate and he tried to keep her safe and would say things that their own mother would have said ( warning Kate to watch her drink ( that becomes her downfall) etc.).

Realistic Portrayal of High School Drama

FULL DISCLOSURE - I know the author, having had the pleasure of working with her. Also, I did not receive an advance copy, Amazon sent the book WAY early... Not that I'm complaining.

Alpine's characters are imperfect... and that's the point. Kate longs for someone to replace the love she has lost by the death of her mother and her emotionally absent father, to the point that she makes very poor decisions when choosing friends at her new school. Her environment challenges her, and at first she chooses to ignore her conscience. Watching Kate develop - as a character and as a young woman - reminds me of the difficulties many of my students experienced. Alpine does not judge Kate; she creates a multidimensional character who learns how to make adult choices through (unfortunately) realistic consequences, and allows the reader to make their own decisions.

I've shared the book with several others, including my parents, who were shocked by some of the content. This is not a book for the fainthearted or innocent. But it is real. I'm glad I stepped outside of my typical genres to read Canary, and look forward to Alpine's future releases.

REAL, RAW, and WONDERFUL!

Seriously good book. It is a serious real life situation, that happens more than anyone wants to admit, that was made into a great story that I read in like 5 hours. I have to say, I could not put this book down. I started it and HAD to finish it.

OK, so it is a story about Kate, whose life changes drastically when her dad lands a job at the elite private school, Beacon Prep, as the head coach of one of the top basketball teams in the state. The Beacon Prep basketball team rules the school, and can do no wrong, if you know what I mean. They are worshiped like gods at the school and treated as such by students and faculty alike. There are also definitely issues with Kate's family because they are still all trying to cope and deal with the loss of their mother a year or two before from cancer and the family really kind of deteriorates into a "shell" or "ghost" of a family. The book is written in blog form by Kate, with consistent, regular entries and with bits of poetry in between. She posts about her experiences of dating one of the hottest, most popular basketball players on the team upon switching schools when her father takes over the Head Coaching position. It is about how her life dramatically changes when she moves to this new elite school, where she is able to become this new, cool, popular kid, and chronicles those life changing experiences as they unfold. She suddenly becomes friends with the "cool" kids and feels her true self slipping away, eventually realizing she has become a shell of the person she once was...... especially after a life changing event, towards the end, that sends her life spiraling out of control. The people she thought were her friends, are not her friends at all..... and Kate finds herself in a position where she must stand up for herself and for what is right, no matter the consequences. It in turn brings her closer to her Dad by the books end and seems to start the healing process so that Kate, her Father, and her brother Brett can be a true family again. Definitely a tragic story at times, uplifting at others, but true to life and more real than anyone wants to admit. Great story overall. I definitely enjoyed it.

There are some beautiful passages throughout, one in particular that I would love to quote, but cannot right now because the copy is an Advanced Readers Copy. I will re read the final released copy and add it in once done.
