About the Author
Jack London was an American author, journalist, and adventurer. London s early careers as sailor, fisherman, and prospector provided inspiration for his later writing, and it was only when he returned from the Klondike that London decided to focus on social activism and journalism. He soon became a popular magazine columnist and author, and a prolific commercial writer, penning over two dozen novels, and numerous short stories and poems. His most famous works include The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea-Wolf, and the short stories To Build a Fire, and An Oddyssey of the North. London died in 1916.

An excellent collection

Of Jack London's many short story collections, Moon Face is one of the best I've read. The stories vary widely in style and subject, and, for the most part, you won't find the wilderness adventure stories for which London was famous (There is one, out of eight). London liked to experiment with diverse subject matter and literary techniques, often with mixed results. In this collection, originally published in 1906, he is successful on all counts. These eight stories are well-crafted, vividly descriptive, and suspenseful. A few of the stories explore the psychology of murder, and show the influence of Edgar Allen Poe, as does the closing novella "Planchette", which deals with the supernatural. "The Minions of Midas" is a tale of terrorism that's years ahead of its time. "The Shadow and the Flash" is pure science fiction, incredibly imaginative for its time and still exciting 100 years later. The only wilderness adventure story in this book, "All Gold Canyon", is one of London's absolute best. It contains some of his most beautiful descriptions of the natural environment, and a detailed nuts-and-bolts description of the process of gold prospecting. If you're familiar with London's work, you'll love this book. If you only know him from his sled dog stories, give this collection a try and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

A Good Read

In my attempt to switch to a digital library, I've purchased Moon-Face and Other Stories. You can never go wrong with Jack London's books! This one, just as the others I got earlier, is well made and easy to read. I like the active Table of Context that allows me to go straight to a story I want to read. I haven't noticed any mistakes or "bugs" so far. Will keep adding new books to my e-library. Thank you, Amazon, for coming up with the Kindle - what a great way to enjoy multiply books on one small, lightweight device!

About the Author
Emeritus Professor Andrew Hopkins is an Associate Member of the National Research Centre for OHS Regulation and is an adjunct Professor with the School of Sociology in the College of Arts and Social Sciences at The Australian National University.

He was an expert witness at the Royal Commission into the causes of the fire at Esso's gas plant at Longford in Victoria in 1998, leading to the publication of his two books on this disaster, Lessons from Longford and Lessons from Longford: The Trial.

In 2001 he was the expert member of a Board of Inquiry into the exposure of F111 maintenance workers to toxic chemicals at Amberley Air Force base. The Board's report revolutionized the way the Australian Defence Organisation approaches work health and safety. This work led to Andrew's interest in safety culture, culminating in his book, Safety, Culture and Risk.

He has been a consultant to various government agencies, safety regulators, as well as to unions and companies.

Practical, Plain English Review of a Major Incident

Andrew Hopkins is adept, using plain english, at describing the essentials of industrial high consequence events and the aftermath of the investigative process. His focus is very much about learning lessons and not losing sight of the low likelihood/high consequence events that characterise serious incidents. Hopkins is well respected, and his insight and practical approach mean that everyone is capable of learning the lessons. He doesn't sit on the fence and is not afraid to assign accountability at all levels of business, society and government.

Easy to Read & Insightful

The incident is sited often as a tragic accident resulting in loss of life and injury to many workers in addition to extensive damage. Hopkins gives an account of what happened and the background to reasons why. He doesn't pull any punches in getting to the root causes. Well written and easy for layman to understand -- not full of industry jargon. Highly recommended read.

Make Sure to Get the Errata

The text presents an estimating procedure using production rates. While this is good background to have and is an acceptable methodology, make sure that your instructor also shows you how to use Means. The text does contain numerous errors, so make sure to get the errata sheets from the author. When we asked the author why the corrections have not been updated in the text, the author replied that the publisher said it would cost too much. Somebody needs to tell the publisher to quit selling the book until they fix it!

This book needs to be completely revised.

The original author of this book has been deceased for several revisions. The revisions were not well done and the book is outdated in many areas. Lots of photos which are not worth the space they take up and should be removed. I believe this book survives in tech schools because it has nuggets of well written and well thought out analysis of the estimating process. Without much explanation as to why, the author leans heavily toward the Heavy Civil sector of construction i.e. highways, airports, etc. The software included is also designed for heavy civil. All said, no other author on construction estimating seems to have the grasp of the foundations of estimating as this author. For me, it makes a nice supplemental reference book but I would never adopt it as a textbook.

4 Stars for Advanced Hypno-Experts, 2 Stars for the Hypno-Neophyte

This book was okay. I was looking for a book to help write stories that inform and help make them stick in a persons mind better and I picked up a few things from this book.

Over all if you are a hypnotherapist this is a great book for you. The concepts and scripts given are unique from other hypnosis books I've read.

If you are not a hypnotherapist then this book is probably to advanced for you plus there are a number of referals back to the 1st edition which I DID NOT read so I was out of luck.

Finally there are a number of typos which really slows down the reading process.
I give this Four Stars for someone with a background in hypnosis (DJ fix the typos and it would be a Five Star) and I would give it Two Stars to the hypno-neophyte.

Grade 7 Up–Hughes, the founder of Comfort Zone Camp for grieving kids, believes that sharing experiences about losing a parent begins the healing process. Her purpose in writing the book is to let teens know that they don't have to feel isolated–there is help available for them. The book opens with the author's story of losing both of her parents by the age of 12 and living with an unloving stepmother. Fourteen chapters lead readers through the process of grieving and dealing with life without a parent. Quotes from former campers are interspersed throughout the book, giving insight into a variety of ways young people have dealt with loss. One teen states: People get that losing a parent is hard, but I don't think they fully understand everything we lose with them. It isn't just a person that is lost, it is a lifetime worth of memories yet to be made. Talking with a counselor, therapist, teacher, coach, or religious leader is suggested, along with keeping a journal. Information about Comfort Zone Camp is appended. She begins by telling her own unvarnished tale: her parents died before she was a teenager, and the other adults in her life were not nurturing. Noting that healing continues each time she tells her story, she then weaves the stories of more than two dozen teens who have lost parents--including several whose parents died in the attack on the World Trade Center--into chapters about grief, remembrance, loss, what helps, and moving forward. Hughes is not facile or eloquent with words, and the many quotes from the young people at Comfort Zone Camp are couched in simple, often slangy or cliched language. Necessary for kids (and their parents) after a loss

I was 20 when I lost my mom to cancer and even now, over 13 years later, I still identified so vividly with the thoughts and feelings expressed by teens in this book. I wish You Are Not Alone had been around at that time. There was so much I didn't know and could have learned from reading it. As a parent now I also feel the book offers insights for us to understand better what our children might be experiencing during the loss of a loved one. There is no other book written that deals so accurately and compassionately with this devestating experience.

IF THEY CAN OVERCOME IT CAN YOU?

This story takes place at the Comfort Zone Camp. Teens talk about how they miss each of their parents and how losing a parent can affect your whole life. They help each of the teens with their struggles. They all share each of them stories that remind them of their parents.

This is a heartwarming story! They explain how always remembering you parent help. I know how it feels because losing my dad was I very hard thing for me and this book help me through hard times because knowing that there are other kids and teens that they are going through the same thing I'm going through. And somehow that helps me!

I think anyone who had lost a parent should read this book because they will know that a lot of teens have feelings after a loss of their parents. And that every person should be heard.

I bought this book for my daughter after the death of her dad in 2009. I read it before she did so that i would know what it was about. I am very glad that i bought this for her. I gave her this and a highlighter so she could relate to some of the stories in the book. It helped me to know some of her feelings afterwards so that we could focus on things that were top priority in her mind. this is a book of other children telling their feelings and stories of loosing a parent. I knew somethings to expect, but other i had no clue. I would never have know why she would do the things she did without preparing myself and seeing what most children do with this kind of loss. she was popular in the sixth grade and after her dads death, she quit being friends with most of the girls in her group, expecially those that had close relationships with their fathers like she did. She is coping very well 2 years later and i am so glad i found this book.
