What Got You Here Won't Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful, by Marshall Goldsmith, Mark Reiter

America’s most sought-after executive coach shows how to climb the last few rungs of the ladder.

The corporate world is filled with executives, men and women who have worked hard for years to reach the upper levels of management. They’re intelligent, skilled, and even charismatic. But only a handful of them will ever reach the pinnacle -- and as executive coach Marshall Goldsmith shows in this book, subtle nuances make all the difference. These are small "transactional flaws" performed by one person against another (as simple as not saying thank you enough), which lead to negative perceptions that can hold any executive back. Using Goldsmith’s straightforward, jargon-free advice, it’s amazingly easy behavior to change.

Executives who hire Goldsmith for one-on-one coaching pay $250,000 for the privilege. With this book, his help is available for 1/10,000th of the price.

From Publishers Weekly
Goldsmith, an executive coach to the corporate elite, pinpoints 20 bad habits that stifle already successful careers as well as personal goals like succeeding in marriage or as a parent. Most are common behavioral problems, such as speaking when angry, which even the author is prone to do when dealing with a teenage daughter's belly ring. Though Goldsmith deals with touchy-feely material more typical of a self-help book—such as learning to listen or letting go of the past—his approach to curing self-destructive behavior is much harder-edged. For instance, he does not suggest sensitivity training for those prone to voicing morale-deflating sarcasm. His advice is to stop doing it. To stimulate behavior change, he suggests imposing fines (e.g., $10 for each infraction), asserting that monetary penalties can yield results by lunchtime. While Goldsmith's advice applies to everyone, the highly successful audience he targets may be the least likely to seek out his book without a direct order from someone higher up. As he points out, they are apt to attribute their success to their bad behavior. Still, that may allow the less successful to gain ground by improving their people skills first. (Jan. 2)

From Booklist
By now, the CEO as celebrity is old hat. (Just start counting the books from former company heads.) That goes for the executive-recruiter-cum-president-makers. What has yet to be explored--until now--is the celebrity business coach, the individual who helps C-level executives correct flaws, whether invisible or public. A frequent interviewee in major business magazines like Fortune, Goldsmith, with the sage help and advice of his collaborator Reiter, pens a self-help career book, filled with disguised anecdotes and candid dialogue, all soon slated for bestsellerdom. His steps in coaching for success are simple, honest, without artifice: gather feedback from appropriate colleagues and cohorts, determine which behaviors to change (and remember, Goldsmith specifically focuses on behavior, not skills or knowledge), apologize, advertise, listen, thank, follow up, and practice feed-forward. Admittedly, this shrewd organizational psychologist only works with leaders he knows will listen, follow advice, and change--especially considering that he doesn't receive fees until improvements are secure and visible. On the other hand, these are words and processes anyone will benefit from, whether wannabe manager or senior executive. Barbara Jacobs

Review
"As a guy who has had some success in my life, I especially understood and appreciated what this book taught me. The point of the book is actually the title and subtitle. He states: "The problems we'll be looking at in this book are not life-threatening diseases (although ignored for too long they can destroy a career). They're not deep-seated neuroses that require years of therapy or tons of medication to erase. "More often than not, they are simple behavioral tics 'bad habits that we repeat dozens of times a day in the workplace' which can be cured by (a) pointing them out, (b) showing the havoc they cause among the people surrounding us, and (c) demonstrating that with a slight behavioral tweak we can achieve a much more appealing effect.

"One of the keys to a good business book can be found in the Table of Contents. This book is not different. The four sections are titled: The Trouble with Success; The Twenty Habits That Hold You Back from the Top; How We Can Change for the Better; Pulling Out the Stops. If you go into a bookstore to check this book out, just look at the twenty habits. They were a scary eye opener for yours truly. I used up one hi-lighter on this book and found way more bad habits I have and need to change than I care to admit. The nice thing about this book is that you can identify the flaws you didn't think you had and fix them without anybody knowing you had a problem. Now that is a huge benefit. All in all, this is an important book." -- Jack Covert, Jack Covert Selects, 1800CEOREAD

"Goldsmith has no interest in probing why people behave the way they do. He doesn't try to reshape their personalities. He measures success by the extent to which other people's perceptions of his clients change for the better . . . he teaches them how to apologize for their shortcomings -- 'the most magical, healing, restorative gesture human beings can make,' he writes in his book [What Got You Here Won't Get You There] . . . and then to ask for help in getting better . . . 'It's much harder to change people's perceptions of your behavior than to change your behavior,' he says . . ." -- Barbara Rose, Chicago Tribune

"If you decide to purchase one new book this year I encourage you to make it What Got You Here Won't Get You There. This is the top tier of leadership information available!" -- weLEAD Rating - highly recommended

"The book is written pretty much the way Marshall speaks. It is simple, brutally honest, and humorous. It doesn't try to get fancy. It's economically composed, crafted to be useful. It will appeal to people with no time to waste. Like its author, it's practical and to the point . . . What Got You Here will be required reading for many years to come. -- David Zweig, Senior Editor, World Business Academy Perspectives

"This is a superb book, practical with a rich understanding of human behaviour and how to change. Mr. Goldsmith has endless examples from his work and his own personal failings, and the result is a chance for readers whose companies don't hire him to get the benefit of his expertise." -- Harvey Schachter, Globe and Mail

"What holds you back from achievement? Marshall Goldsmith is an executive coach who has worked with over eighty CEOs in the world's top organizations -- so he's in the perfect position to examine how global leaders overcome self-defeating habits, translating these lessons to the modern condition and everyday man in What Got You Here Won't Get You There. From key beliefs in successful leaders to common behavior flaws, this book translates drawbacks to success, and will find an audience in any general-interest collection where self-improvement is of interest." -- Diane Donovan, Midwest Book Review/California Bookwatch

"You'll see the results whether you're a CEO or just getting started." -- BookPage

To Marshall Goldsmith: Thank You for Writing This Book (And We're Not Sucking Up):

Marshall Goldsmith is one of the most successful of corporate America's celebrity coaches -- he typically makes upwards of a quarter-million dollars for a year or so of work with each individual client -- and is also one of the best. ... The beauty of Goldsmith's approach lies not just in the simplicity of his insights, but also in the clarity of his advice. ... Goldsmith has written a leadership manual that could double as a guide to good parenting and marital peace. -- Knowledge@Wharton

Misleading title; should be called "how to be less of a jerk"
By Alex
I suppose it's my own fault for not researching this book more carefully. Based on the title, I thought it would be about how the habits or activities that lead to success in lower levels of a person's career might become less important or even limiting later on in their career, and how to deal with that. Like how a manager needs to act differently from an individual contributor, or how a middle manager needs to act differently from a line manager. That's not what this book is about. This book is about how talented people who are arrogant jerks can become nicer in order to progress in their careers. That's useful if it's what you're looking for, but it's not what I was hoping to find.

As a corollary, I also felt the author perceived the world with a "cop's fallacy". Police officers sometimes assume everyone in a certain neighborhood or of a certain demographic is scum, because they are only called in to deal with crime, so most people they deal with in that neighborhood or demographic are criminals. Much in the same way, Goldsmith seems to believe that all successful people are arrogant and overconfident, when the truth is more likely that successful people who are not hugely arrogant do not lead their employers to hire a consultant like Goldsmith to fix their behavioral issues, so he doesn't interact with them.

The book provided a lot of good information on ways to consistently change to meet new environments and challenges when moving forward in one's career. Marshall has a great number of years expertise on the subject, and explains all concepts well.

How To Write Your Best Story - Advice for Writers on Spinning an Enchanting Tale, by Philip Martin

''I find that most people know what a story is until they sit down to write one.''-- Flannery O'Connor

Beginning writers too often believe that plot, or character development, or some structural element is what's needed to get published. This book looks at what really makes fiction work: good storytelling.

''A good writer is basically a storyteller,'' said Isaac Bashevis Singer, winner of the Nobel Prize. However, basic storytelling techniques, despite their immense value to all writers, are seldom taught in writing courses or in ''how to get published'' books of advice.

This slim book explores three key elements that fuel the magic of story - intriguing eccentricity, delightful details, and satisfying surprises. The proven storytelling techniques are time-tested and used by the best authors, including by winners of the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer, and National Book Award, as well as by commercially successful authors whose books appear on bestseller lists and whose work is treasured by generations of fans.

Written by an accomplished editor and indie-press publisher, this guide draws on the author's decades of experience in the book trade, studying what really works for emerging writers and editing many books of advice on literary craft and career development.

It will help writers in their efforts to craft better fiction (or nonfiction) and to get their best work published.

Review
"An inspiring, captivating gem of book on the storyteller's art. I loved it."
- Douglas Clegg, author of Neverland, Isis, Afterlife, and many other acclaimed & bestselling novels

"This is a gem of a book - a must-read for anyone who wishes to craft the 'best story' possible."
-- Raymond Bial, author of more than 80 critically-acclaimed books for children and adults, including Amish Home, The Underground Railroad, Where Lincoln Walked, and many others.

What [Martin] succeeds in doing, admirably, is not only describing some of the elements of good storytelling, but describing them in such a way as to model good storytelling. . . . In short, this book is wonderfully readable.

A Refreshing Look at Storytelling
By Moira Allen
Martin launches his book with the premise that thousands of stories are being written with "something lacking." The writer labors, but fails to grab the attention of the reader. In this book, he asks whether good storytelling can be "taught."

What he succeeds in doing, admirably, is not only describing some of the elements of good storytelling, but describing them in such a way as to model good storytelling in the very act of explaining it. In short, this book is wonderfully readable. I have stacks of books on my shelf, waiting to be read -- but when I picked up this one I wanted to keep going until I finished it.

Martin breaks down the topic of storytelling into three basic sections: Eccentricity, Details, and Surprises. Each section is satisfyingly complete, and packed with examples from favorite stories, classic novels, and some less well-known sources. Throughout the book, Martin weaves in a parable to keep the reader "hooked" on a growing story that serves as an example of the techniques being described.

The tips here aren't new or groundbreaking. We've all heard that "less is more," and that knowing what to leave out of your story is just as important as what to put in. What works here is the style in which the material is delivered. Too many books on "how to write a story" are dry, pedantic and dull -- delivered like lectures to a group of drowsy students. Others illustrate their text with examples drawn entirely from their own works -- which is great if you think their work is brilliant but not so great if you don't.

Thus, for a book on "how to write well" to work, it must itself be written well -- and in such a way as to encourage you to read it. In this, How to Write Your Best Story is a success, and an enjoyable addition to any fiction writer's bookshelf.

Phillip Martin has edited several of my books, so I know that he is a great editor. Now, having read How to Write Your Best Story, I can say that he is a great writer, too.

This is a gem of a book--a must read for anyone who has written or wishes to craft the "best story" possible. Toward the end of the book, Phillip refers to a work by nature writer Barry Lopez, who define isumataq, the Inuit word for "storyteller," as follows: "the person who creates the atmosphere in which wisdom reveals itself."

This summarizes the tone and insight of this wonderful little book. It is just one of the many words of wisdom in which Phillip Martin weaves a story about how to better write and simply enjoy our own stories.

Excellent up-to-date overview of HDR software
By M. Denis Hill
This will jump start your HDR efforts with descriptions of most leading programs and introductions to creating realistic and artistic images with each.
David Nightingale starts by explaining high dynamic range imaging, why we often want to extend the dynamic range that can be captured in a single exposure, and how tone mapping determines the final look of an image converted back to LDR for output. He goes on to describe the shooting process. After the basics, he moves into descriptions of how popular programs ... including some recently introduced ones ... work to merge and tone map bracketed sequences.
HDR capability is appearing frequently in standalone programs as well as integrated in photo editing suites. This book covers the current major programs, many of which I use: Photoshop CS5, Photomatix Pro, HDR Express, HDR Efex Pro, Olneo PhotoEngine. The strengths of each are described in sufficient detail to help the novice make a thoughtful investment. Some of the techniques covered are noise reduction, how many images to use, and how each option offers different presets and tone mapping tools. As one who started dabbling in HDR about three years ago, let me say that I find that the addition of presets hugely speeds up the tone mapping process.
After describing the programs, the author provides examples of "photorealistic" and "hyper-real" HDR images. The settings are included to expand on the more abstract discussion in earlier chapters.
The chapter on post-production covers helpful techniques including noise reduction, halo removal and other techniques that might not occur to a beginning practitioner of high dynamic range imaging.
I use Photoshop, Photomatix, and HDR Efex Pro ... both for artistic renderings for gallery sales and realistic for high contrast architectural images. With this experience I can confirm that the author's descriptions of how the programs work and how to maximize results are quite accurate and useful. I did discover one point that was misleading, so I'll share the truth.
HDR Efex Pro does not include raw image conversion. It relies on Adobe Camera Raw most of the time. Another option is the pre-process raw images in your preferred converter, then merge 16-bit TIFF files. But two other options work. Here's my current workflow:
Select an image set in Adobe Bridge.
Open in ACR and turn on Lens Profile Correction, white balance, straighten tool, noise reduction, and possibly other corrections not related to exposure.
Click "done".
Use tools>photoshop>merge to HDR Pro.
Choose 32 bit output and process.
When the 32 bit image appears in Photoshop, go to filters>Nik Software>HDR Efex Pro.
This gives me the best of ACR with a fairly simple workflow. I used to be able to bypass the Merge to HDR Pro step, but that stopped working for me after the last ACR update. In that scenario I would do my ACR settings and click "done." Then I'd go to HDR Efex Pro in the filters menu and after the raw conversion and merging to 32-bits was done I'd be presented the image in the tone mapper.
I still like The HDRI Handbook 2.0: High Dynamic Range Imaging for Photographers and CG Artists for a more geek-oriented approach, and HDR Efex Pro After the Shoot (After the Shoot) for more in-depth tips on using HDR Efex Pro. All three of these books suffer from some photos being too small to adequately illustrate image differences, but each is a worthwhile addition to an HDR library.

A practical guide for a strict beginner
By Amazon Customer
As is the case with most books and gurus that try to 'teach' digital imaging techniques, the whole genre is based on image content that you will rarely ever see or have the chance to capture. Most don't realize this until they try to get an effect that matches the slider settings for a specific sample image. This book is full of 'set the slider here to get this' in the various programs talked about and most of the info on the programs is simply 'move slider here' or a rehash of basic program use. This of course is what the vast majority of the digital imaging education system is about and why it makes it so difficult for beginners to really learn instead of mimicing canned technique.

About the only part that would have any real world use is the first few sections of the book where the author goes into the dynamics of image capture. His explanation of dynamic range based on perception and equipment is enough to get a basic understanding of what DR is and how to shoot for maximum effectiveness. The software part is sadly lacking in cohesiveness and you quickly find yourself making useless comparisons between each program that is mentioned. He also skips rather quickly over noise reduction using such Photoshop plugins as Noiseware and this issue alone is one of the deciding factors over a really good image especially with large print output. As the vast majority of output today is Facebook oriented garbage then quality isn't really a big issue so good noise reduction in this case isn't warranted.

So, for a beginner, you get the gist of DR capture but you quickly get bogged down with software and tiny image sample comparison. Also, the book isn't formatted for Kindle/Nook reading with references to samples that can show up 2 or 3 pages later which makes it a nasty deal flipping back and forth on a pad reader.

Still As Good As It Gets
By Conrad J. Obregon
As time passes, both High Dynamic Range (HDR) software and the books about it change. Yet David Nightingale's updated second edition of "Practical HDR" continues to be one of the best books about the subject.

In this new version the author deals with some of the most popular HDR programs: Photoshop CS5, Photomatix Pro, HDR Express, HDR Efex Pro and Oloneo PhotoEngine. The book begins with an explanation of dynamic range which is essential to using any of these programs well. The author then tells how to shoot HDR images most effectively. He provides an overview of each piece of software and then explains how to use each, first to create realistic images and then to create surrealistic images (or what he calls hyper-real images.) He finishes the book discussing post-processing of HDR images, like increasing contrast and removing halos.

Given the size of the book, the author does an excellent job of explaining how each of the buttons and sliders in each of the programs effect the image. He also provides a number of images by both himself and other well-known HDR photographers that document the settings used to achieve the results. His writing is clear and concise and except for a book dedicated to just one piece of software is as comprehensive as any one can find. One will still have to experiment with the sliders but with this book in hand, one will have a good starting point.

Nightingale is at pains to state that he does not want to recommend one program over another, or compare them, but any careful reader should be able to connect the dots himself. Occasionally, he misses a feature of a program, like Photomatix Pro's ability to batch process images which I find very useful for HDR panoramas, but these are features the user can discover as he or she goes along. By the way, most of these programs have full-featured demos available which should aid the photographer in purchasing choices.

I do have to confess that the small sans-serif type is difficult to read, but one interested in the subject should not be discouraged by the typography.

Most of these HDR programs are just as complex as Photoshop, and no one should expect to get great images out of the gate. Just visualizing the possibilities of hyper-realistic images may be mind-bending. To be truly successful one will have to spend time not just with the programs, but with other HDR books that have different approaches.

HDR photography is not for the beginner, but the more proficient photographer will want to extend the range of light in his images. None of these programs is intuitive and all require extensive use to master. Even with the preset previews that most of these programs provide it is often hard to visualize how to move sliders to achieve both realistic and hyper realistic effects. This book is perhaps the best start in HDR photography that one can get.

Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela, by Nelson Mandela

The book that inspired the major new motion picture Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
Nelson Mandela is one of the great moral and political leaders of our time: an international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country. Since his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela has been at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's antiapartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule. He is revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality.

LONG WALK TO FREEDOM is his moving and exhilarating autobiography, destined to take its place among the finest memoirs of history's greatest figures. Here for the first time, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela tells the extraordinary story of his life--an epic of struggle, setback, renewed hope, and ultimate triumph.

Amazon.com Review
The famously taciturn South African president reveals much of himself in Long Walk to Freedom. A good deal of this autobiography was written secretly while Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years on Robben Island by South Africa's apartheid regime. Among the book's interesting revelations is Mandela's ambivalence toward his lifetime of devotion to public works. It cost him two marriages and kept him distant from a family life he might otherwise have cherished. Long Walk to Freedom also discloses a strong and generous spirit that refused to be broken under the most trying circumstances--a spirit in which just about everybody can find something to admire.

From Publishers Weekly
Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and the first democratically elected president of South Africa, Mandela began his autobiography during the course of his 27 years in prison.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
This is an articulate, moving account of Mandela's life from his "country childhood" following his birth on July 18, 1918 to his inauguration as president of South Africa on May 10, 1994. Mandela traces the growth of his understanding of the oppression of the blacks of South Africa; his conviction that there was no alternative to armed struggle; his developing belief that all people, black and white, must be free for true freedom; and the effect that his commitment to overthrowing apartheid had on his family, who "paid a terrible price." Over a third of Mandela's memoir tells of his 27 years in prison, an account that could stand alone as a prison narrative. He ends his book with the conclusion that his "long walk" for freedom has just begun: "For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others." Highly recommended for all collections.

Even better than I knew it would be!
By Amazon Customer
I can't fully express in words what this books means to me. I put off reading it for years. Mr. Mandela was released from prison in my college years and so I knew who he was, and what he accomplished on a very surface level. I always knew I wanted to know his life';s story on a deeper level.

The writing is forceful, and beautiful and honest. I received inspiration, education and amazement from reading this book.

Again, I can't truly do this autobiography justice in a review. If you have EVER had any inclination or interest in reading this? Trust me! It is better than you thought it could be.

Let me end by saying that the best way I can describe this book is that after reading it, it made me determined to be a better person!

"The oppressor must be liberated just as surely as the oppressed."
By Abba
A great man, a beautiful soul and character!
so much injustice done upon him and his people , their only crime was their rich lands!
The book is nice, i do admire, respect and idolize the man, but unfortunately due to the fact of him spending 27 years from his life in prison, has rendered the book with lengthy chapters simply narrating the routine and boring prison daily life. It is unlike normal memoirs, were too much events and actions engulf the charcters life, such as that of Malcolm X.
However; in general the book is easy to go through, with what is sufficient to learn from this great man about resilience, persistence, leadership, dignity and hope! Never give up hope! Never break and always be optimistic!
Even while on trial with possibility of being hanged as the highest, he was still studying in preparation for his London university exams. One of his quotes , "the human body i have found has an enormous capacity for adjusting to trying circumstances. I have found that one can bear the unbearable if one can keep one`s spirits strong."
As for south Africa at the time, with its racist regime, its strict and inhuman apartheid, was like the USA of earlier times, Belgium Congo, Portuguese Angola, and many other places where the Lust and greed combined with lack of human consideration and the diseased European culture of superiority over other nations, has led to the destruction and erosion of diverse and rich ancient cultures that had complex ruling systems and lived as one with the land!

The Freedom Fighters Guide to Success
By Rasheed
Long Walk to Freedom is not only a story of Nelson Madiba Mandela's life but a history of South Africa under apartheid and a history of the African National Congress (ANC). The book goes from Mandela's early childhood in a small village to his early adulthood in the big city all the way through his 27 years of incarceration to his eventual freedom. You get to read about the true machinations of apartheid during its height and during its waning hours.

I learned a lot about Nelson Mandela whom I knew so little about. South Africa and apartheid was never a major issue in the U.S. hence I learned absolutely nothing about it in school. I remember a big deal being made about Nelson Mandela's release and his presidency but still I never knew more than apartheid was a mistreatment of Black Africans. To what extent and in what form I never knew.

This book delves into how the Afrikaans (White South Africans primarily Dutch) really treated Africans and to what lengths they went to subdue and subjugate the Africans. He discusses the National Party, the various laws enacted and his own political evolution while trying to fight injustice. I learned of the various men and women that were essential to the Africans' fight for equality and about the different groups and organizations that developed as well.

Nelson is amazing if for one thing; he could have had money and ease yet he eschewed that for being a freedom fighter. Nelson grew up a part of the household of a Chief. He got an education and became a lawyer and had considerably more money and liberties than most Africans (although considerably less than most Afrikaans). For many Africans that would have been enough to be placated and they would have sufficed with living relatively comfortably. Nelson was not satisfied with that. He desperately wanted freedom for himself and his people. They weren't slaves, but he wanted freedom in the form of equality and the absence of debilitating laws. Nelson sacrificed two marriages and quality time with his children for the "struggle". Being a freedom fighter drew him away from the home for many hours of the day, many days of the month and many months of the year to eventually many years of his and their lifetimes.

I grew to respect Mandela a lot through this book. I would have given it five stars if not for its length. Mandela was admittedly verbose. I don't know how many pages the book is because, for whatever reason, my Kindle version never told me. I could ascertain my location, my reading speed and my percent completion of the book but not the page. Whatever the amount of pages it was 115 chapters. I know that Nelson wanted to mention those things which affected him or were memorable, but it seemed he mentioned too many details.

Still, the book is excellent and a must read. I'm so happy I read it and now have a greater knowledge of South Africa's history and a greater appreciation of Nelson Mandela the man.

Basic, but worth the read.
By Jason Parker
Mitchell and Jolley's Research Design book is designed with the undergraduate psychology major in mind. "Research Design Explained" offers a comprehensive, however elementary, synthesis of some the most fundamental aspects in psychology research. If someone were interested in a more in-depth understanding of how to create better experimental designs, I would recommend Shadish, Cook, and Campbell's "Experimental and Quasi-Experimental Designs for Generalized Causal Inference." These two books in combination are a win.

One enigma after another teases the erudite brain of the professor
By Patto
Professor Theocritus Lucius Westborough is frail, white-haired, undersized, and pushing seventy. He is so learned that ordinary people sometimes have trouble following his conversation. A history scholar, he's likely at any moment to quote Ovid, Pliny the Younger, or a seventeenth-century English divine.

Westborough is an unlikely sleuth, but he has a reputation in law enforcement circles. The busy sheriff deputizes him to investigate the murderous activity at the remote country estate of scientist Arnold Bancroft, where Westborough is a guest.

Bancroft has disappeared. There's evidence he's been shot and his body thrown off a cliff. This is just the beginning of a series of deadly events.

To complicate matters, there's a dangerous escaped convict roaming the area. In this remote Wisconsin forest, threats seem to lurk everywhere.

Westborough is awash in clues -- a bloody handprint, a missing antique longbow, a stolen saucepan, a cut-up gown, a missing book, a mysterious light in the forest... Westborough ponders these unconnected details endlessly. He also does a complex calculation of probabilities in an attempt to analyze a crime scene.

First and last, Westborough is a professor. At one point he even lectures all the suspects like a classroom full of students. His erudite speech and fussy little ways are funny and charming -- and the main attraction of the Professor Westborough mysteries.

The crimes in this book are so complicated, diabolically clever, and rapidly executed as to feel a bit farfetched. But this is a cerebral mystery that takes us back to The Golden Age of Detection, when murderers were far subtler than they are today. The Death Angel was first published in 1936.

My favorite books in this series are The Man From Tibet, Blind Drifts and Green Shiver. I'd suggest reading those books first. You may find it hard to stop reading Clyde Clason once you've started. Unfortunately, he only wrote ten of these quirky vintage mysteries.
